BULGARIA by car
After Romania, which I really liked, the following year I set my sights on nearby Bulgaria, arriving by plane in Sofia and booking a car on the spot with which I traveled across the country to the Black Sea coast and then returned to the capital for the return flight to Italy. .
This time I traveled alone but I was never bored as I met a lot of other tourists and this time a lot of locals.
Sofia is a beautiful city with beautiful green parks, a very impressive church which is dedicated to a Bulgarian king declared a saint and then there is a perhaps even more beautiful Russian church which is reminiscent of the one in Red Square in Moscow.
I headed south towards Bansko which is a famous ski resort where they also have world championship races. There are characteristic old houses made of particular wood and then recent high-rise hotels.
Further on I arrived at the Rila monastery, beautiful in a valley surrounded by woods.
Then I met the second city of the country, Plovdiv, the old Filippopoli, very beautiful with a pedestrian street in the centre, and on the hill a Roman theater and houses of a particular style and with strong colours.
And then I met some places whose names I don't remember but which are frequented for their thermal waters.
There are spas and swimming pools that I frequented. I encountered a valley of roses, the production of which Bulgaria is as famous for as it is for rose perfumes.
It is a place with an ancient temple with a round roof and some precious relics.
Then it was Veliko Tarnovo's turn, a beautiful hilltop town with a castle and long walls.
Then the journey along the Black Sea coast began, first a place with a castle where in the past a Bulgarian queen stayed who received her lover who came from the sea,
The castle is small but is located near the beach and has various terraces with beautiful plants.
There are various tourist towns on the sea with several hotels and then you get to Gold Sands, and Sunny Beach, a sort of Rimini-Riccione with long sandy beaches, large hotels where the rich Russians have invested and not far away the beautiful town of Nessebar with small houses and low churches, but also a beautiful beach from which you can see Sunny Beach and Golden Sands in the distance.
And then Varna, a beautiful city by the sea with many beautiful beaches on the outskirts and further south Burgos, with large construction sites but it also has a beautiful beach.
Then many other seaside towns up to the Turkish border.
Some locations are very beautiful, with coves, very beautiful natural environments.
In these places I made friends with a beautiful woman who hosted me in her house, we talked for many hours while drinking a strange local liqueur that she offered me and then a group of young boys who had arrived at the seaside to take art courses.
I reluctantly left the coast to go back
However, before arriving in Sofia I passed through another beautiful place Koprivstica with its beautiful museum houses built in 1700-800 in wood and painted with strong colors in a relaxing atmosphere with many trees, cultivated fields and beautiful hills, a nice place for rest.
I met a nice Bulgarian couple on holiday and an Italian father and daughter traveling alone, very nice and with whom I had dinner one evening in an excellent restaurant.
I quickly returned to Sofia to catch my return plane, satisfied with the beautiful journey in a country that was not exceptional but satisfying from all points of view.
