the difficulty of getting to know locals while travelling
an obstacle is related to the language as generally in third world countries the locals speak only their very particular language, except India where many speak English having been a British colony, as well as the Philippines which was an American colony while in Mexico , Central and South America where everyone speaks Spanish, which is easy for us Italians, except for Brazil where Portuguese is spoken but still resembles Spanish.
In Africa, the most accessible language is French as many countries were French colonies (Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Congo former Belgian colony, Gabon, Cameroon, etc...) or English (South Africa, Zimbabwe ex Rhodesia, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Liberia, etc...)
English also applies to Canada (apart from Quebec where they speak French), Australia, New Zealand.
The other problem is connected to the general poverty especially in third world countries where the locals have to work hard to bring home the bread and have neither the time nor the desire to talk to tourists unless they work in related sectors to tourism, so it ends up that you know more other tourists than locals
